topWhy have you re-launched SDL Chat Translator™?

The previous version of Chat Translator™ was developed for AOL® Instant Messenger™ (AIM™) 5.9. We have re-launched as a plug-in for the AIM™ 6.8.

topCan I still use SDL Chat Translator for AOL® AIM™ 5.9?

topWhat should I do if I am a current subscriber to SDL Chat Translator?

If you are a current subscriber, you can login to your account and download the new version of SDL Chat Translator application for AIM 6.8 if you wish.

topDo I need to be a paying member of AOL to use AOL Instant Messenger and Chat Translator?

No, you do not need to be a paying member of AOL to use AOL Instant Messenger. Anyone can open an AOL Instant Messenger™ account and download the AIM 6.8 software at no cost at www.aim.com.

Once you have created an AOL Instant Messenger 6.8 account and installed the AOL Instant Messenger software on your computer, you will be able to install and use SDL Chat Translator.

topDoes Chat Translator support all versions of AOL Instant Messenger?

No.Chat Translator only supports AOL Instant Messenger 6.8 for Windows. You can download AIM 6.8 from www.aim.com.

Chat Translator does not work with AIM Express.

topDoes Chat Translator work with Yahoo Messenger or Live Messenger?

No.

topDoes SDL Chat Translator™ work with MSN Messenger?

No.

topDoes SDL Chat Translator™ work on Macintosh computers?

No. Chat Translator currently runs only on Windows computers.

topWill I be able to use the Chat Translator in a chat room?

No. We have designed Chat Translator to chat on a one-to-one basis.

topWill the translations always be perfect?

No. As you may have seen on FreeTranslation.com, computer-generated translations offer a rough but generally understandable foreign-language version of the original text. The advantage of using Chat Translator in a real-time chat environment is that you have the ability to tell the person you are talking to that you did not fully understand their previous sentence. They can then rephrase it so that you can better understand it.

topHow can I ensure that I get the best possible translations?

If you write relatively short, grammatically correct sentences with proper spelling and punctuation, you will generally get a readily understandable translation. When composing your chat messages, use the same care you would use if you were speaking face-to-face with someone who does not speak your language fluently. Be clear and precise. Do not use unnecessarily complex sentence structures.

topAre all the language directions currently available on FreeTranslation.com available in Chat Translator?

topCan I pay by giving my credit card details over the telephone?

No. Only online transactions will be supported. The system we use is a secure online payment system.

topIf my card expires before my next subscription payment, what do I do?

If a payment request is made on a card number that has expired, your subscription will obviously not be paid. This will result in your access to the system being suspended. You will then need to subscribe again.

topHow do I subscribe again if my card has expired?

Login to the subscriber page and follow the instructions for re-subscribing.

topHow do I cancel my subscription?

Simply visit https://secure.freetranslation.com/account/chat/cancel/ and submit your request.

Installation questions:

topWhy couldn't I download and run the installer?

Some companies and individual PCs prevent the download of an executable file. You will have been sent a link to download a zip file in your subscription acknowledgement email. Please click the link and download the zip file.

If you have not kept the email, please log on to your account and select the downloadable zip file. Once you have downloaded the zip file and saved it on your computer, unzip it and run the setup file.

Some computers require you to be an administrator to be able to run and install software.

Using SDL Chat Translator:

topCan I chat with more than one person at a time with Chat Translator?

Yes. Chat Translator supports multiple windows so you can chat with as many buddies as you want in their own language. Each chat window you open with a different buddy allows you to add their settings to them individually.

topIf I am chatting with more than one buddy, how do I know which buddy will receive the translated message?

Each AIM chat window you open allows the language settings to be specified for that individual buddy. They will receive the language you set for your Outbound Messages. You can check this from the Actions menu and select Buddy Language Settings.

These setting are default set for ‘Do not translate’, so if your other Buddy has this setting, they will not get a translated message.

topWhat is to stop me giving my email address and password to other people?

A Chat Translator account can only be accessed from one computer at a time. When a Chat Translator account is in use, that email address and password are blocked to anybody else who may be trying to translate something at the same time through that account. If you give your email address and password away and somebody else is using it, you will not be able to gain access to translations. It is in your interest not to give your account information to anybody else.

topDoes the person I am chatting with have to have Chat Translator as well?

No. If you are using Chat Translator, any text that you type into the outgoing message field will be translated when you click the “Send" button. The other person will receive the message translated in the language you have selected and the original message in your language. You will also be able to see both languages.

Any message received from your buddy will be translated instantly and appear in the AIM window, again in both languages.

topHow do I get to login to my subscriber account to view or change details?

Visit https://secure.freetranslation.com/account/.

topCan I change my email address?

Yes. Simply login to your account using your old email address and existing password and you will be able to change your email address. Remember you will also have to change your email address in your SDL Desktop Translator, Platinum Club and SDL Clipboard Translator if you have them.

topCan I change my password?

Yes. Simply login to your account using your existing email address and existing password and you will be able to change your password. Remember you will also have to change your password in your SDL Desktop Translator, Platinum Club and SDL Clipboard Translator if you have them.
